Colorado National Monument
Rim Rock Drive — Sunset & Stars Over Red Rock
The Grand Valley’s crown jewel is a 23-mile scenic drive winding past sheer red-sandstone canyons and monoliths, five minutes from downtown. It’s $25 per vehicle for a 7-day pass (and free on 10 days in 2026), so it’s a genuine cheap date: pack a picnic, catch the sunset from an overlook, and stay for some of the darkest, starriest skies in Colorado.
The Riverfront Trail
28 Free Paved Miles Along the Colorado
A paved path runs 28 miles along the Colorado River from downtown toward Fruita and Loma, threading parks, wetlands and wildlife areas with red-rock and Monument views the whole way. Rent bikes downtown or just walk a stretch at golden hour — it’s the free backbone of Grand Junction and a lovely, easy date.
Art on the Corner
Downtown’s Free Open-Air Sculpture Walk
Main Street doubles as an outdoor gallery: Art on the Corner, the country’s first permanent outdoor sculpture exhibit, lines the sidewalks with around 100 rotating sculptures (some made to be climbed on). Grab a coffee, wander between 1st and 7th, and window-shop the historic downtown. Completely free.
Las Colonias Park
Float the Lazy River & Butterfly Pond
A 130-acre riverfront park on the Colorado with a lake, a skate park, an amphitheater and a lazy-river tube channel to float on a hot afternoon. Bring your own tubes and a picnic and the park stays free — and the river-and-red-rock views are unbeatable.
Western Colorado Botanical Gardens
Butterfly House & Riverside Gardens
A pocket of green right on the Riverfront Trail, with a warm tropical butterfly house, cacti and koi — a sweet, low-cost stroll for two (admission runs under ten dollars a head, so two stay under $20). Open Monday through Saturday; pair it with a walk on the trail alongside.
Enstrom’s Almond Toffee
Split a Box of World-Famous Toffee
No Grand Junction date is complete without Enstrom’s, the almond-toffee institution that’s shipped its buttery, chocolate-covered squares worldwide since 1960. Grab a small box or a few pieces from the downtown shop for a few dollars and share them on a sunny bench.
💡 Heads up: The Monument charges $25 per vehicle (good 7 days) but is free 10 days a year, and the Botanical Gardens close Sundays. Check ahead before you head out. Want dinner too? Two eat for under $20 in Grand Junction → · Kids? Kids eat free → · Visiting? On a budget →
