Gus’s Hot Dogs
Griddle Dogs Since 1947 — Under Five Bucks Each
Downtown’s longest-surviving Greek-owned hot dog stand, a tiny concrete counter that has been griddling snappy dogs since 1947 and ladling them with Gus’s sweet-tangy secret sauce. Dogs run well under five dollars apiece, so two people can load up on a few — add kraut and slaw — and still come in comfortably under $20. There’s barely room to stand; grab your brown-bagged dog and eat in the car.
Full Moon Bar-B-Que
Birmingham-Born BBQ & Famous Chow-Chow
The Alabama ’que chain started right here in Birmingham, hickory-smoking pork and ribs and crowning every sandwich with its famous sweet-hot chow-chow. It’s a value pit: BBQ nachos run $7.99, a four-piece chicken plate with fries $6.99, and ten wings $6.99 — so two people can split a starter and grab sandwiches for well under $20. Don’t leave without a Half Moon cookie.
Eagle’s Restaurant
Soul Food Since 1951 — Plates Around $9–10
A North Birmingham institution since 1951, family-run and once featured on the Travel Channel, serving a rotating daily lineup of from-scratch soul food. Pick a meat — fried chicken, oxtails, fried pork chop, meatloaf — add two vegetables and cornbread, and you’re looking at roughly $9–10 a plate, so two eat a full Southern spread for about $18–20. Lunch only; closed Saturdays and Mondays.
Green Acres Cafe
Legendary Fried Wings — Very Reasonably Priced
One of the last Black-owned restaurants still standing downtown, Green Acres has fried its famous chicken wings — plus catfish, fried green tomatoes and fried okra — for decades, earning a city proclamation and national shout-outs along the way. It’s a counter-service steal: wing plates and catfish keep two people well under $20, with hot sauce on request. Seating is tiny, so most folks take it to go.
Sneaky Pete’s
Secret-Sauce Dogs Since 1966 — A Birmingham Ritual
If you grew up in Birmingham, you grew up on Sneaky Pete’s — a hometown hot-dog chain slinging snappy dogs under its “secret’s in the sauce” beef sauce since 1966. Dogs run just a few bucks each, so two people can knock back the Original with kraut and onions, add fries, and stay easily under $20. There are locations all over the metro, including downtown on 4th Ave N.
University Tacos & Burritos
Downtown Street Tacos ~$4 — Chips Included
A no-frills downtown taquería turning out griddled street tacos — asada, al pastor, chorizo, carnitas, birria — for around four bucks each, with chips and salsa thrown in. Two people can each grab a couple of tacos, add an agua fresca, and land near $16. The birria, served with rich broth for dipping, is the one to get. Quick, fresh, and right on University Boulevard.
Los Valedores
Authentic Taco Truck — Tacos $3.50, Two ~$16
A beloved blue taco truck that grew into a Homewood restaurant after five-plus years of slinging some of the city’s most authentic Mexican street food — homemade tortillas hot off the grill, asada, al pastor, carnitas, chicken. Tacos run $3.50, quesadillas $7 and stuffed burritos $9.90, so two people can build a real spread for around $16–18. Catch them downtown too, at Good People Brewing across from Regions Field.
Davenport’s Pizza Palace
Thin-Crust Since 1964 — Share a Pie Under $20
A Mountain Brook treasure since 1964, Davenport’s bakes a cracker-thin, square-cut pizza that regulars swear is the best in the state. A two-item pie runs roughly $15–19 and easily feeds two, so split one and you’re under $20 with room for a salad — or hit the weekday lunch combos. Retro vibes, arcade games, and a line out the door at the carry-out window.
Demetri’s BBQ
Greek-Accented BBQ & Award-Winning Breakfast
A Homewood fixture since 1961, Demetri’s smokes Alabama ’que with a Greek accent and turns out a breakfast locals will argue is the best in the Southeast — griddle biscuits, cheesy grits, French toast. A pork or chicken sandwich with a side, or a from-scratch breakfast plate, keeps two people under $20. Save room for the lemon meringue pie.
Saigon Noodle House
Scratch-Made Banh Mi & Pho — Two Around $15
A longtime Birmingham favorite for scratch-made Vietnamese, now tucked into River Ridge off Highway 280 and beloved for big portions at honest prices. Banh mi sandwiches run about $7.50, so two people eat for roughly $15 — or split an order of fresh spring rolls and a steaming bowl of pho. Grab a pearl smoothie for the road.
The Purple Onion Deli & Grill
24-Hour Gyros & Burgers — Combos From $8.95
A Birmingham mini-institution since the ’90s, the Purple Onion griddles rotisserie gyros, fat hand-formed burgers, kabobs and loaded baked potatoes around the clock at fast, fair prices. A gyro combo with fries and a drink runs about $10, the steak-burger special $8.95, and the hand-formed bacon cheeseburger under $5 — so two eat well under $20, any hour of the day. Don’t skip the mint iced tea.
Steel City Pops
Birmingham-Born Gourmet Pops — $3 Each
Born in Birmingham in 2012 and named for the city’s steel-making past, Steel City hand-makes paleta-style popsicles in small batches — buttermilk, blood orange, mango habanero, chocolate — from real fruit and cream. At about $3 a pop, two people can each grab one (try the dip-and-drizzle add-ons) for under ten bucks. Find them at The Summit.
