Pulaski BBQ

A regulars' Portuguese BBQ on Walnut Street, deeper in the Ironbound. The steak sandwich with cheese, onions, and fries is just $6–7 — one of the cheapest plates in the neighborhood — alongside charcoal chicken and ribs. Two people each grab a steak sandwich for around $14. Exceptional char and seasoning.
Banh & Bo
Vietnamese Bánh Mì for Two — about $14–18
A modern Vietnamese banh mi café on Market Street, steps from Prudential Center and Newark Penn Station. A grilled-pork banh mi is $9 and the signature combo $12, with Vietnamese iced coffee and crinkle-cut fries. Two sandwiches with drinks run around $18, each their own.
Canela Bakery
Pastéis de Nata & Coffee for Two — about $8–12
A locals' Portuguese bakery on Wilson Ave in North Newark's quieter Portuguese pocket, baking pastéis de nata to order — pulled from the oven with just the right char. Two pastéis, two coffees, and a savory snack runs an easy $8–12. The Ironbound experience without the Ferry Street crowds.

Half Pollo a la Brasa — $12 (feeds two)

Cachapa Loka

A Lower Broadway spot for Venezuelan and Dominican street food — patacones (crispy smashed-plantain sandwiches) start at $5.81, plus cachapas, arepas, and empanadas. Two people each eat a stuffed patacón for around $13. Bold, filling, and a rare find.
Taqueria Los Güeros
Street Tacos — ~$3 (5 for $7.99 Tue)
A downtown Newark taqueria on Halsey Street for authentic street tacos — al pastor, carnitas, chicken — around $3 each, or five for $7.99 on Taco Tuesdays. Two people share a stack of tacos for well under $20.
💡 Pro tip: The Ironbound runs on its own schedule — Portuguese restaurants hit their stride at dinner (8pm+), Brazilian spots around 7–9pm, and bakeries are best early morning before they sell out. Cash is still king at smaller spots like McWhorter and Pulaski. If you're coming from Penn Station, Ferry St. Barbecue is a 5-minute walk, and Banh & Bo is right on Market Street. Start mornings at Teixeira's or Canela before the pastéis sell out. If a deal has changed, flag it on our main directory.
