The flagship Ironbound BBQ spot, right at the start of Ferry Street. Spice-rubbed meats charcoal-grilled on a hand-rotated spit — half ribs and half chicken with yellow rice and shoestring fries is the killer combo. Also does bacalhau na brasa (broiled codfish) and garlic shrimp. Large portions, great prices, indoor and outdoor seating. Gets packed at lunch — worth the wait.
McWhorter Barbecue
Off-Strip Portuguese BBQ for Two — ~$14–18
The Ironbound's best-kept secret, tucked one block off the main tourist drag on McWhorter Street. Quarter chicken with rice and beans for $10 — that's enough for one very hungry person or a light plate for two alongside pork ribs. The giant combination tray (ribs, chicken, rice) feeds two handily for under $20. Cash, Zelle, and Cash App accepted. Consistently rated one of the best BBQs in NJ.
Pulaski BBQ
Charcoal Chicken & Ribs for Two — ~$15–19
A 15-year regular's pick on Walnut Street, deeper in the Ironbound away from the tourist foot traffic. Steak sandwiches with cheese and onions for $7.50, BBQ chicken for $12, pork ribs for $15 — one of the most affordable plates in the whole neighborhood. The seasoning and charcoal char are exceptional. Regulars call it the best chicken and ribs in Newark, full stop.

Brazilian & Portuguese Home Cooking for Two — ~$16–20
Family-run Brazilian and Portuguese kitchen on Jefferson Street, earning a 4.7-star reputation by cooking the way grandmothers cook — not for tourists. Grilled pork chops, hanger steak, feijoada, and chouriço served on fire. Cozy atmosphere with live music on weekends. Every review mentions the portions are huge and the prices are honest. One of the Ironbound's most genuine experiences.

Two bowls come in well under $20. A perfect palate break from the Portuguese-heavy Ironbound strip, and one of the only Korean options in downtown Newark. Dumplings on the side are worth adding.

A West African and Caribbean kitchen on Central Ave that feels like the owner's living room — warm greeting when you walk in, often met by the owner herself. Jollof rice with suya combo, jerk chicken, jumbo whole red snapper, and boiled plantain round out a menu that's genuinely hard to find at this quality anywhere in the Newark area. One of the most unique cheap eat experiences in the city.

The locals-only alternative to Ferry Street's tourist bakeries — tucked on Wilson Ave in North Newark's quieter Portuguese pocket. Cash is still king at smaller spots like McWhorter and Pulaski. If you're coming from Penn Station, Ferry St. Barbecue is a 5-minute walk.
