Anchor Bar
Wings for Two — $16–20 🏆 Birthplace of the Buffalo Wing 1964
The restaurant that started everything — Teressa Bellissimo invented the Buffalo wing here on Main St in 1964 and the world has never recovered. Two orders of wings with celery and blue cheese lands right around $20. Most meals priced $6–15. Memorabilia-covered walls, lively bar, and the bragging rights of eating where it all began. Tuesday is half-price wings night — best value in the house.
Duff's Famous Wings
Wings & Sandwiches for Two — $14–18
The great Buffalo wing debate: locals tend to say Duff's perfected what Anchor Bar invented. 5 wings for $7.49, fried bologna sandwich $7.99, beef on weck also on the menu. The medium-hot sauce is the classic move — bright, buttery, properly spicy. Two people eat very well for $14–18. Sheridan Dr is the flagship. Order the Loganberry soda — it's a WNY original and you won't find it anywhere else.
Nine-Eleven Tavern
South Buffalo Wings for Two — ~$16–20 💵 Cash Only
South Buffalo's fiercely protected wing secret since 1981 — the locals' answer to where you actually go for wings. Cash only, no takeout, no reservations, no air conditioning. Just jumbo wings fried in a tiny kitchen and slathered in house-made buttery hot sauce. Wings can take up to 40 minutes but every serious wing person who visits Buffalo says it's worth every minute. Vintage shuffleboard, back deck, old sports memorabilia — pure South Buffalo character.
Ted's Hot Dogs
Two Charcoal Dogs & Onion Rings — $12–16
A Western New York institution since 1927 — charcoal-broiled Sahlen's hot dogs, legendary handmade onion rings, and hand-spun real milkshakes. Regular dog $3.59, footlong $5.24, average dish just $3.40. Two people get footlongs, onion rings, and a shared milkshake for under $16. The charcoal grill gives the dog a snap and smokiness that a steamed dog never will. Nine locations across WNY; a must-stop on any Buffalo visit.
Schwabl's
Beef on Weck for Two — ~$18–22
America's most underrated sandwich at its most iconic address — West Seneca since 1837, current location since 1942. Beef on weck is slow-roasted, thin-sliced roast beef piled high on a kummelweck roll: a German-style bun crusted with coarse salt and caraway seeds. The beef is carved tableside at a carving station. Spicy horseradish is non-negotiable — ask for au jus on the side for a gloriously sloppy experience. Two sandwiches with a side of German potato salad puts you right at $20. Closes at 8pm.
Bocce Club Pizza
Cup-and-Char Pizza & Wings for Two — $14–18
Cup-and-char pepperoni pizza since 1946 — hand-stretched dough, 100% whole-milk mozzarella, and the Buffalo-signature pepperoni that curls into little grease-filled cups with charred edges. A 10-piece order of buffalo wings is $7.99. The chicken fajita sub is also $7.99. Two people sharing a personal pizza or each getting a sub and wings fits comfortably under $20. Multiple Amherst and East Amherst locations.
Pete-n-Paul's Pockets
Two Pita Pockets — ~$12–16
South Buffalo's beloved neighborhood pita pocket institution on South Park Ave — chicken finger pitas, chicken souvlaki, taco pockets, meatball pockets, and the legendary critters (fried dough bites that have been a local obsession since the 90s). Everything is generously stuffed and priced at true neighborhood rates. The kind of place locals fiercely protect and out-of-towners never find without a local tipping them off.
Jimmy's Texas Hots
Two Texas Hot Plates — ~$10–14
A Buffalo classic on Delaware Ave serving the Texas Hot — a hot dog topped with spicy meat sauce, mustard, and onions that is a distinctly Western New York tradition. Also does burgers, grilled cheese, chili dogs, French toast, and full breakfast plates. Old-school neighborhood diner pricing throughout. Two Texas Hots with home fries and coffee comes in well under $14. The kind of counter diner Buffalo does better than anywhere.
La Nova Pizza
Buffalo-Style Pizza & Wings for Two — $14–18
A Buffalo pizza institution since 1957 — cup-and-char pepperoni on thick dough with rich sauce and whole-milk mozzarella, also celebrated for their wings. The chicken finger pizza is a uniquely Buffalo creation worth knowing about — chunks of breaded chicken finger on pizza with blue cheese and hot sauce. Two slices and wings between two people fits the budget easily. Multiple locations across WNY.
Parkside Candy
Sponge Candy & Ice Cream for Two — ~$8–14
Buffalo's most beloved sweet shop since 1927 — home of sponge candy, a honeycomb toffee dipped in milk or dark chocolate that barely exists outside of Western New York. The Art Deco interior on Main St is as much the draw as the candy itself. Also does ice cream sodas, sundaes, and hand-dipped chocolates made in-house. A pound of sponge candy and two ice cream sodas is a genuinely special Buffalo experience well under $20.
Anderson's Frozen Custard
Custard & Beef on Weck for Two — $10–18
Western New York's frozen custard institution since 1946 — rich, dense custard in sundaes, cones, and concretes (mix-ins blended to milkshake thickness). Also serves a proper beef on weck sandwich, making it a legit full-meal stop. Two custard sundaes run $6–10. Two custards and a shared weck sandwich makes a quintessential Buffalo afternoon well under $20. Multiple WNY drive-in locations.
💡 Pro tip: Nine-Eleven Tavern is cash only and wings can take 40 minutes — don't arrive starving. Schwabl's closes at 8pm so plan for an early dinner. Anchor Bar runs half-price wings on Tuesdays. Ted's and Anderson's locations vary on hours by season — call ahead in winter. If a deal has changed, flag it on our main directory.
